In 1806 Thomas Jefferson’s good friend and legal mentor, George Wythe, was allegedly poisoned by a family member. In his legacy, Wythe gave Jefferson his silver cups and Jefferson began to focus on creating the perfect cup. Through a series of events, including working with multiple metalsmiths, Jefferson came to invent the true “Jefferson Cup” that is continually replicated today.
